Chris Campbell swims W.I.S.E.ly

Ferndown Otter's very own Chris Campbell swam for England against Wales, Ireland and Scotland over the weekend in the W.I.S.E. School's International. Chris took home 3 Golds, 1 Bronze and 2 Dorset county records from the Meet at Crawley. Follow the link to the Echo article by Roger Guttridge.

Judith Cooling chosen to represent GB

Judith Cooling has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 4th DSISO (Down Syndrome Int. Swimming Organisation) Championships in Portugal alter this year.  Well done Judith! We're proud of your achievements and the hard work you put into your training.

Dorset County Champs (2nd Weekend):

Glorious sun bathed the mid-February weekend. Crisp mornings gave way to warm afternoons and golden evenings. All annoyingly academic for Dorset's swimmers and their loyal parents who spent a second weekend at Littledown for the County Championships. Otters started the weekend leading the points and medal tables. With many of our swimmers away or having succumbed to one of the many viruses doing the rounds, there was some concern for our ability to maintain our position. Once again the sight of so many Ferndown parents parading to their official positions in perfect whites provided the needed boost in morale and the Otters set about doing what they do best - swimming fast and finishing first!

With Reuben in full song, and Tony, Emma and MarkT in encouraging form, the Otters performed superbly across the board. With outstanding swims from many other clubs, Ferndown swimmers were still able to stamp their supremacy on the proceedings (in this writer's view).

By the end of Sunday, Ferndown Swimming had stretched its lead to 280 points (the equivalent of 35 1st places swims!) with a good lead in the Heats Medal Tables and a dominant first place in the Finals Medal tables.

With 182 individual swims that were some combination of Age Group CBT (champ. best time), Jnr CBT, Snr CBT, Jnr Record, Senior Record, WCQT (westerns qual. time) or NQT (national qual. time), it's not possible to fairly list the best swims. The list of impressive pb's is even more extensive. This writer, however, was singularly impressed to see Elliot Wilks achieve a pb in the 400 Free even after stopping at 350 metres for a chat with the timekeeper!

The club is grateful to DCASA for their hard work in running the event and to all the parents who volunteered to help.

Dorset County Champs: 1st weekend

With so many Ferndown parents resplendent in their white uniforms and and steady drinks trays, it may have been a little easier to ignore the swimmers for once. This illusion did not last much past the first starting signal. With almost 100% participation rates from our eligible Otters and a good training program under way, the results and acronyms flowed. PB's CBT's CtyRecs, WQT's as well as NQT's abounded (and confused the uninitiated).

Hants & South Coast Invitational Meet, Jan 26 th 2008:

A few parents thought they would prefer a quiet weekend in preference to a trip to Aylesbury for the Maxwell Meet. Not to be, for the families of 14 Otters selected for the H&SC Invitational Meet at Haslemere on Saturday evening.

Hopes were high for good results and indeed the Otters had won the Junior Cup last year in our first outing to this meet. With strong competition the overall Cup remained beyond our reach this time. However, with 35 of our 41 swims being personal bests and only one DQ in a very young and inexperienced team, no-one left disappointed.

Top 3 places went to:-

Christy Cole – 1 st 10 y/o Breaststroke.
Steph Hughes – 2 nd 10 y/o Backstroke, 1 st 10/yo Fly, 1 st 10 y/o Free
Clodagh Dear – 1 st 11 y/o Backstroke, 1 st 11 y/o Fly, 3 rd 11 y/o Free
Ben Hyde – 1 st 11 y/o Backstroke, 2 nd 11 y/o 50 Free
Mikey Kingsley – 3 rd 11 y/o Backstroke, 2 nd 11 y/o Fly

The Girls relay swam outstandingly to win by almost 4 seconds. The boys relay team won too after a ferocious battle in the final leg by Ben Hyde. Harvey Trehane also made a great contribution to the relay for one so young!

Steph Hughes won Top Girl award in the 10 y/o category and Clodagh Dear and Ben Hyde won 2 nd Girl and Boy awards respectively in the 11 y/o category.

Final points overall were :-

Woking 397
Rushmoor Royals 365
Hart 347
Ferndown 314
Epsom District 286
Alton and District 214
Fareham Nomads 211
Godalming 202
Andover 165
Haslemere Blue 164
Havant and Waterlooville 162
Basingstoke Bluefins 126
Gosport Dolphins 85
Haslemere White 66

So well done to all the young Otters and thanks to Lizz, Becky, Reuben and Debbie for managing the team.

Maxwell Level 2 Meet, January 2008:

Kevin Brooks is the head coach of Maxwell Swimming Club. He previously coached with Emma at Ferndown and so the Aylesbury meet has always been a relaxed and enjoyable weekend for the Otters contingent. With just over 40 Otters entered, local hotels did well out of our club.

With some fast times posted at the end of last year, expectations were not high for pb’s but as Session 1 progressed on Saturday morning it became apparent that something special was happening in the pool. By Sunday evening and with 5 sessions completed, Ferndown swimmers had amassed 34 Golds, 21 Silvers and 19 Bronzes. More importantly the vast majority of swims resulted in pb’s.

Harriet (Higgety) Higgins was DQ’ed for moving on the blocks in her 200 Breast which was especially unfortunate as she put in a terrific swim to take a massive 15 seconds off her pb! She made amends by taking 15 seconds off her 200 IM pb to win the 9-10 y/o age group. Jeff Holtom made large inroads into all his freestyle pb’s and was even spotted racing in a swim cap! Emily Fellows swam a gutsy 200 IM to take 5 seconds off her best time and put a large smile on Lizz’s face. Zoe Watson and Kimberly Rowles together took charge of the 100, 200 and 400 Free to take two of the top 3 places in each. Daniel Speers needed a trailer for all his gold medals. Chris Campbell was on top form as was Alastair Hardie.

Most of the swimmers unwound, before the drive home, in the fun pool. This was not necessary for the parents, many of whom had done some serious unwinding on Saturday night at the Holiday Inn.

This was a great start to the year’s competitive calendar. Hopefully all swimmers will stay healthy and work hard in the run up to Dorsets.

Full results can be found on the Maxwell website, but medal places went to:-

Victoria Joy Swims In Brighton Jan 12,13

Victoria Joy (10) competed in her first open meet as a Ferndown Otter  at the weekend at Brighton Swimming Club.

Victoria finished 4 th in the 50m F/c (32.78s), 5 th in the 100m F/c (1m 13.76s), 9 th in the 200m F/c (2m 45.29s), 7 th in the 100m Br/s (1m 43.56s), 9 th in the 100m B/c (1m 30.15s) and 12 th in the 200m B/c (3m 05.43s).

Victoria missed out on a top 3 finish in both the 50m F/c and 100m F/c by less than 0.5sec.

A very strong team from Portsmouth Northsea Swimming Club were also competing and in Victoria’s age group Nicola Dollery (PNSC) dominated, winning all events except the 100m Br/s, setting National qualifying times in a number of events – a star of the future.

Otters Presentation Evening

A crammed calendar meant Ferndown Swimming ended up running the ABCO Gala on the afternoon of Sat 7th Jan followed almost immediately by its Presentation Evening at the Ferndown British Legion that night.  The presentation kicked off with a welcome from the Chairman. This was mercifully short, notwithstanding the impressive list of achievements attained by our swimmers last year.  The newly instated President of the Dorset ASA, Ray Honeybun, kindly attended and helped with the presentation of trophies.  The awards for exemplary efforts throughout the year were presented to Emma and Chris Wignall.
With the formalities swiftly dispatched, the important business of eating and dancing commenced. A herculean effort in the kitchen by Tracy, Shelley and their small army of helpers ensured that even the high calorific requirements of the swimmers (and some of their parents!) did not make a dent in the food supply. The very reasonable prices behind the bar ensured a steady queue at the back of the hall too!

Dancers on the floor ranged from toddlers to the frankly-middle-aged.  It was thought by some that even though the children are accomplished swimmers, they still have much to learn about disco from their parents!  It's not certain whether the swimmers shared this view and the debate continues.

The food and festivities were clearly enjoyed by the 150 plus people who attended and this was a true reward to all those who worked so hard to make the evening such a success.

Thanks to all the parents who brought their swimmers and who took part in this celebration of '07 and helped kick off '08 in such a festive manner.

Western Speedo League - Premier Final, December 2007
Gutsy, dogged, assertive, heroic, superb, outstanding, above-and-beyond; all good examples of clichéd hyperbole but none good enough to describe an astonishing performance by the Otters at Round 3 of the Speedo Western League.

The weather did little to facilitate the journey up to Millfield for the long-course final. Torrential rain and water-logged roads hinted at the hurdles ahead for the team. Indeed, Plymouth was there in force and war paint! Millfield even had its own band!

An accident near Yeoville meant Bournemouth’s coach was delayed. The Hortons too were delayed but managed to find a way through well in time, to the great relief of the 11 & Under Boys and Emma. The start was put back as far as possible which contributed further to the pre-Gala tension.

With Plymouth and Millfield firm favourites for the first two spots, Otters’ challenge was to protect our 5 th place seeding or to improve on it if possible. City of Cardiff and Bournemouth Dolphins were ahead of us in the seedings. Taunton Dean was a clear threat too. The gala started about 20 minutes late and the battle commenced.

Race after race, relay leg after leg, Otters stepped onto the blocks and gave their all; many were still not fully recovered from the flu’s and colds of the last few weeks but no-one delivered anything less than a full 100%.

After 10 events Plymouth were ahead with 69 points to Millfield’s 66. Ferndown was in 3 rd with 50. Taunton, Cardiff and Bournemouth were all within 10 points. It was already clear that Plymouth and Millfield would battle for the top two places and leave Otters to fight it out for third with the rest. After 18 events, Ferndown was in 3 rd with Taunton 19 points behind. After 26 events Ferndown was still in 3 rd with Taunton now 15 points behind. After 34 events, Ferndown was still in 3 rd but with Cardiff now 4 th and 24 points adrift. After 42 events Cardiff was again 4 th and 22 points behind Ferndown in 3 rd. Otters were aware that with the senior races ahead the last 8 events were critical. Cardiff closed in on the Otters but after the smoke had cleared Ferndown remained 12 points ahead in 3 rd!

Final Points :

Plymouth 333
Millfield 316
Ferndown 232
Cardiff 220
BDSC 205
Taunton 202
Bridgend 162
Tigersharks 125

Tony and his team were ecstatic with this result. It was higher scoring 3 rd place than the previous two years and Ferndown’s most impressive result ever. The team effort and spirit was a thing of beauty! We wait on tenterhooks to see if this result is good enough to make National Finals.

First places went to:-

Nicole Scott Open 100 Fly
Fran Hughes Open 100 Breast.

Second places went to:-

Luke, Noah, Mikey, Todd 11 & Under Free Relay
Georgi, Naomi, Fiona, Emma 13 & Under Medley Relay
Todd Price 11 & Under 50 Back

Craig Freeman 15 & Under Back

Sami Toombs update (ex Otter emigrated to NZ).

Sunday 25th November 2007 was the 1st race in the New Zealand series of Open Water swimming and  Sami's 1st ever competition in the sea!!!!  Race start was a very early 7.30am.  2.8km swim from Devonport to Auckland Viaduct which had to be completed within 1hr 45mins.  The morning was beautiful although apparently quite 'choppy waters' in the middle of the Harbour.  1107 swimmers competed and the first swimmer (17yr old Kane Radford) arriving in at a competition best time of 29.37mins!  Helen Norfolk (NZ Olympic swimmer) came in at 33.48min and Sami an impressive 127th place with a time of 40.53 mins (wearing seaweed!).  9th position in her age group (15-19yrs) and 34th female out of 404.

She thoroughly enjoyed it and is looking forward to next years events - 'King of the Bays'!

Kim Rowles G.B. tour in Aus - update

Hi Ferndown,
Really proud of you all with the results of the final round of Speedo you all swam gr8. Hope we make it to the National Final.

I had another gr8 week, swimming 56K in the IM lane.  Moved out of the freestyle lane to concentrate more on my other strokes.  My best session was 40x50 10 on each stroke Max but doing v.well on 15m and 25m sprints.

I'm now in Australia, it's much better than Singapore.  Met up with the boys and we are all training together, they are all really funny. The boys are in the hotel opposite, I can't understand why. heehee!! Saw David Davies yesterday and I met some Olympic swimmers as well, They are awesome in the water!!!

If any of you are thinking that you wish you were me, well don't cos i've had to do all my own washing this week!  All my white tops have gone pink!! Its quite a nice shade tho. I'm not going to do any ironing. LOL!!

I won't see most of you now til 2008 so have a Merry Crimbo and a Happy New Year.
Love Kim

Winter Sprints:
Ferndown Swimming held its Winter Sprints on Sat 1st Dec at Rossmore. The event ran smoothly thanks to Chris and Nigel and their team of Officials and to Michelle, Stuart and Di and their team of volunteers. It was a good opportunity for our younger swimmers to test the competitive waters and navigate the hazards of eagle eyed Judges ready to pounce and disqualify for the merest hint of an early start or an errant fly-kick!  We look forward to seeing our newbies competing in open Meets soon.  Check back for details on the web site where you can order photographs taken at the event - we'll post these details s soon as we have them. Also, check the Meets section for the full set of results.

Just done this set today-
10 x 400 im 1 im 1 fly/bc 1bc/brs 1brs/fc 1 fc/fly all x2! great set coz my times were realli good and felt good! 40x 50 today 10 on each stroke did really well again which is really good kept up with Anne Bochman  and Aimee Wilmot. Feeling good in the water.

Went on a safari on Saturday and then shopping! Every designer shop you could name.  Did some damage to my trav cheques!! Had major badger eyes but a day on the beach on Sunday got rid of them.  Hope you are all working hard. Miss you all and see you soon.

Haslemere Level 1 Meet, 17/18 November

Perched on the leafy outskirts of Haslemere, just off the A3, lies the Herons Leisure Centre. Any sense of complacency caused by the approach through the autumnal woods soon dissipated at the sight of the Millfield and Plymouth teams. Clearly this would be a high level Meet. Notwithstanding a raft of pb’s from the smallish Otters contingent, medal placings were few and far between. Most final heats had 6 of the 8 lanes filled by Plymouth swimmers. Owen Morgan, a Welsh swimmer, gave the whole crowd a treat with a 22.75 50m Free sprint. The Meet was well organised and very well run. A full program ran to time and without major incident. We would like to think this was in large part due to the goodly number of officials provided by Ferndown but in truth was more likely due to the efficiency of the hosting club, Haslemere. The full set of results can be found here Saturday Sunday, perusal of which will show some of the outstanding pb’s, but here are the medal winners:-

Ferndown Swimming AGM 21 November 2007

The Ferndown AGM was held on Wed 21 st November in the meeting room at Ferndown Leisure Centre. The reports by the officers and Head Coach all pointed to a broadly successful year. The chairman highlighted both the expansion of the club over the last year as well as the impressive results across the club at all levels. The coaching staff is excited about the year ahead and will focus on extending these improvements. The new committee is determined to support these aims. The new committee is largely unchanged and details will be communicated as soon as all responsibilities have been finalised. Anyone wanting a copy of the Chairman’s Report or Treasurers Report should email markvides@yahoo.com

ASA South West Region Championships 24/25 November 2007

Hopes were high that this year’s championships would be more successful than last year’s which were curtailed early due to cloudy water at Weston Super-Mare. The 50m pool at Millfield on Sat 24 th looked promisingly clear by comparison.

Tony and Mark Taylor were in attendance looking after a team of 15 Otters. With one final per event and only Junior and Open categories, it’s much harder for small clubs to make their mark at events such as this. Furthermore with so little training under the belt since the summer break and with Speedo Gala peppered around this event few pb’s were expected or obtained. The results however defied our low expectations and Ferndown cars travelled home laden with more silverware than ever before. Tony and Mark T were very pleased with their swimmers efforts and results!

Full results will can be found at http://www.swimwest.org/html/results/region07ch/index.htm but in summary, the following swimmers made the finals and/or medalled. (In order of first appearance)

Chris Campbell finaled in the 200 IM. He was second overall in the heats but had nothing left in the tank for the finals. Chris also won silver in Open category in the 50 Fly. He also won Silver in the 200 Fly in the Open category. He came 3rd overall in the 100 Fly heats but wasn't able to reproduce the same result in the finals.

Dom Macdonald surprised both his Dad and himself to final in the 200IM.

Emily Freeman got Bronze in the 200 Back, Open category. She also finaled in the 100 Free and 100 Back.

Naomi Vides got Gold in the 100 Breast Junior and Open categories. She got Silver in the 50 Breast in the Junior and Open categories. She also won Gold in the 200 Breast in the Junior and Open categories.  (Gold in the 50 went to Achieng Ajulu-Bushell who did really well in fly, free and IM too - and is annoyingly a really nice young girl!!!)

Fran Hughes got Bronze in the 100 Breast and 50 Breast in the Junior category. Fran got Silver in the 200 Breast in the Junior and Open categories.

Anne-Marie Taylor got Bronze for the 50 Fly in the Junior category.

Craig Freeman got Gold in for the 200 Free in the Junior category which was also good enough for Bronze in the Open category.

Nicole Scott won Gold in the Open Category in the 100 Fly. Nicole swam Fly in the 50 Free in a time of 29.80. This would have put her third in the 50 Fly heats overall and

Zoe Watson won Gold in Junior and Open categories in the 200 Free. Her 400 Free swim won Gold in the Junior and Silver in the Open categories. She also finaled in the 50 Free.

Hannah Jenkins finaled. in the 200 Free

Cat Close finaled in the 100 Back.

Speedo Round 2

Proof positive that seatbelts are good for swimming – all the Otters wore their seatbelts on the long coach trip up to Plymouth and overall Round 2 of Speedo was one of Ferndown’s fastest ever! With Dave McManus doing the announcing, now that Lydia is at Plymouth College, it all felt quite familiar. Then the Plymouth machine began its warmup routine and the harsh reality of the impending gala resurfaced. Many of the other clubs seemed intimidated by Jon Rudd’s mighty team but Dom led the Otters in a “Team Grunt” in a plucky David vs. Goliath response.

Plymouth ’s strength was obvious and they inexorably and impressively distanced themselves from the 5 other teams. Otters battled on fearlessly and managed to pick up 6 firsts and 21 second places. Swindon Dolphins with a very strong open section were our nearest competitors both in lane position and in the final points tally. By the 10 th event we were 9 points ahead and we stretched that to 30 at the close.

Tony was pleased with the team’s performance and feels the spirit and effort on show at Plymouth augurs well for Round 3.

In the age group cat we won 2 Golds,  2 Bronzes

Out of  8 events 50% Medal Ratio and we were in 2 other finals where we came 4th and 5th.

This year Ferndown Otters is fielding a group of 10 swimmers at the 2007 National Age Group and Youth Championships in Ponds Forge, Sheffield.  This is a record entry for the club and an impressive percentage of the club's membership.  It's a testament to the coaching program so thanks and congratulations to all our Coaches.  Well done to all the qualifiers, especially to Ellie who will be taking part in her first Nationals.

Our qualifiers are Ellie Beckwith, Naomi Vides, Fran Hughes, Craig Freeman, Zoe Watson, Cat Close, Lydia McManus, Nicole Scott, Emily Freeman and Hannah Jenkins.

The results will be updated in real time on the British Swimming (ASA) web site www.britishswimming.org but check our website next week for a direct link to the results page.

Well done to each and every one of the above swimmers.

Adam Knight Colours Gala:

Ferndown Otters held it's first Colours Gala on Sunday 4 November.  All 12&Unders were divided into 4 teams and Emma observed whilst 4 sets of team managers got on with the job of running the teams.  It was a great opportunity for our youngest swimmers to compete as well as watch the more experienced swimmers race.  Many parents were roped in too, to help out with timekeeping and the running of the event.  Reuben did a sterling job as starter. Such is his natural vocal power that we're considering having a flashing light implanted in his forehead and dispensing with the electronic starter altogether!

The atmosphere was terrific. The swimmers enjoyed themselves but not at the expense of some great swimming! Emma felt that the starts, turns and finishes were better and there were some impressive times and pb's recorded.

Feedback from parents, swimmers and volunteers has all been positive so keep an eye out for future Colours Galas!

ESSA Finals:

The English Schools Swimming Association Inter-Divisional Finals were held in Manchester on Fri/Sat 26-27 October. Ferndown had quite a few qualifiers but because of a clash with the Cyprus camp, only Chris Campbell was able to represent Division 12. Chris swam a couple of fast splits for the Div. 12 team in boh the Medley Relay and the Freestyle Relay where they came 2 nd and 4 th.

Chris went on to win his heat in the 100 Fly. He then recorded a pb to win the final and earn his place on the England Schools team in the W.I.S.E. International Competition to be held next year in March.

Chris is getting into the habit of regular pb’s having taken 4 seconds off his 200 IM time in the first round of Speedo. Well done and keep those pb’s coming!

Avalon Open Meet 20/21 October:

Young Harriet Higgins attended this long course meet. She recorded 4 pb’s including Gold for her 200 Free in 2:47.22. Harriett, swimming a year under the age group, would also have taken silver in the 200IM were it not for a bad fly-to-back turn which resulted in a DQ.

James Moreno Level 2 Meet:

A damp grey Sunday morning saw just over 30 swimmers and staff making a weary return from sunny Cyprus. Around that time another contingent of Otters were on their way to Southampton for the James Moreno Level 2 Meet.

About 10 very hot and humid hours later our team left with 25 medals and 75 pb’s under their belt. There were a surprising number of DQ’s too, most likely due to a combination of over-keen starts and a particularly sharp eyed set of meet officials. Many of the pb’s were quite spectacular and a very good sign for Dorsets, early in the new year. This was the first meet for some of the younger swimmers, so well done to them.

One of our swimmers was double DQ’ed for both a faulty start and a one handed touch in the same race. Another swimmer saw his younger brother DQ’ed for a faulty start and in a show of fraternal solidarity got himself DQ’ed for a faulty start in the same event! The remaining DQ’s were fairly mundane in comparison.

Thanks to Mandy Hardie for managing the team on Emma’s behalf and to her helpers. Well done to all the swimmers on all the medals and pb’s but please work on the starts and turns!

Cyprus Offshore Camp:

Blue skies, hot sun, 50 meters of crystal clear warm water, generous buffets… Heaven! The offshore camp to Pathos was a great success. With 75 000 meters in 11 sessions combined with a trip to the water-park, banana-boat and jet-ski rides, a fantastic evening of food and entertainment at a taverna, all 30 swimmers returned tired but happy.

The accommodation was good; the walls were thick and one could barely hear Mark snoring from the next room. The weather was excellent as 35 sun-tanned bodies attest. The swimmers all worked hard and played harder. Dom got his land training doen by throwing everyone else in the pool, back at the hotel. At the water-park and on the jetski excursion, the coaching staff showed the youngsters how to really have fun!

Ellie celebrated her birthday in style with a pool themed cake provided by the hotel and large enough to feed everyone twice over.

Sophie Nicholson’s grandparents generously provided an evening at a taverna, including a coach to transport the team. Some of the younger female swimmers were very taken with one of the more handsome dancers!

The team was complimented by members of the public and the hotel for its behaviour and the coaches and chaperones were quite well behaved too!

Thanks, on behalf of the swimmers and their parents, to the coaches, chaperones, Jane Burry, Sophie’s grandparents and the minibus drivers.

Ollie Batt:

The club bids a fond farewell to Ollie Batt. Ollie’s work, school and other sporting commitments are such that he has decided to give up swimming. Ollie has always been a valued member of the senior squad and a great role model on club trips for the younger swimmers.

Sami Toombs:

Sue Toombs emailed this update on Sami:-

Sami is doing well with her swimming - her training is much the same as Ferndown’s but with more land-training involved.  She has been on one swim camp soon after we arrived and has another in January (our summer!).   Sami has swum some events she would never entertain in the UK due to the Coaches telling the swimmer what they are to compete in.  200m Fly, 200m
Breaststroke and 1500m Freestyle are definitely not ones she favours!!!   She has made some NZ Nationals times but has more still to collect before the Champs in March in Christchurch, South Island.

Both the kids are members of our local Surf and Lifesaving Club which again is very competitive with their own National Championships.  Sami is in the senior squad and is currently studying her Bronze Lifesaving Award which will enable her to compete and Patrol the Beaches!!!!!

Speedo Round 1 13/10/07

Otters went to Littledown on Saturday evening for round 1 of the Speedo League.  With Bournemouth Dolphins and Tigersharks in the same draw, a tough gala was on the cards.  Once the smoke cleared two hours later, Ferndown was in second place to winners Bournemouth, but only 14 points behind.  Otters took 23 first places out of the 50 races which was more than any other club.  The whole team swam with huge determination and notwithstanding one costly DQ, an injury to our 11&U fly-star and some under-the-weather swimmers, we improved our points total from 179 in last year's first round to 235 this year against, arguably, stronger opposition.  There were far too many outstanding swims to mention in detail but our senior swimmers, in particular, raced well, setting a good example for the younger members and doing the club proud. This writer's "swim-of-the-meet" was the boy's Open 6x50 Freestyle Relay where a courageous performance by all 6 Otters took a very close second to an older and much, much bigger Bournemouth team.

All four coaches, poolside, were pleased with the results and it's a great base from which to tackle rounds 2 and 3. Well done to the team and well done to all the supporters.  Reuben again defended his title as "most vociferous supporter" successfully so there will be no prizes awarded though the chairman was accused by some sitting close to him of getting fairly close in volume.

2007 Hants & South Coast Junior Cup Final

Another Saturday evening, another journey up the M3! This time to Basingstoke for the finals of the Hants & South Coast Junior Cup.  Last year we came a distant 5th to the same clubs, Guildford and Haslemere, competing against us again.  It was clear from the start that Guildford and Haslemere would take first and second place.  Our Otters were in a battle for third with Bracknell and Beau Sejour. At the halfway point and with our only DQ under our belt, we were 5 points ahead of Bracknell but 3 behind Beau Sejour.  With 10 events to go we'd moved away from Bracknell but were trailing Beau Sejour by 6 points.  Our team rallied and cut their lead to 2 points with 5 events to go.  It was neck and neck with just the canon to go but after an heroic effort we finished in third, just 6 points in front of Beau Sejour.

Our third place finish with 209 points is a huge improvement over last year's 5th place finish with 179 points.  Ferndown coaches view this points increase against the same strong teams as a good marker of the improvement in our junior swimmers.

With 33 pb's it's obvious our team swam with determination and effort. There were many notable swims but Sam Bates' win in the breaststroke, Danni Burry's backstroke win in a 2.5 second pb and Fiona Hardie's win in the fly in her first swim for the club are worthy of special mention.

Well done to all the competitors and keep up the good work!

First Place Finishes:

Sam Bates - B U14 100 Breast in a half second pb.
Zoe Taylor - G U12 50 Fly
Clodagh Dear, Lucy Kirkham, Zoe Taylor and Danni  Burry -  G U12 4x1 Free in a 1 second improvement over Round 1
Noah Vides, Mikey Kingsley, Luke Horton and Todd Price - B U12 4x1 Free in a 2.5 second improvement over Round 1
Fiona Hardie - (25) G U14 100 Fly in an over half second pb.
Clodagh Dear -  G U12 50 Breast in a 1 second pb.
Danni Burry - G U12 50 Back  in an over 2 second pb.
Luke Horton, Noah Vides, Todd Price and Mikey Kingsley -   B U12 100 Medley in a 1.5 second improvement over Round 1.

Echo 26/09/07: Chris swims way to golden treble

Hinton Oaks pre-Speedo Gala

Whilst some Ferndown swimmers struggled past the Boat Show to get to the ESSA Division 12 Competition at Southampton Quays, others accompanied Emma and Stuart to Riversmeet in Christchurch for a friendly pre-Speedo Gala organised by Christchurch Seagulls.  Otters led from the start and maintained their lead to win by 8 points over Salisbury who were 9 points ahead of West Dorset.

The atmosphere was friendly but our swimmers still swam with focus and determination, achieving 22 PB's out of 36 individual swims.  First places went to Hannah Dicker, Ashley Mace, Roseanna Bramwell-Reeks, Jordan Lee and  Hannah Beavis. Many swimmers swam up an age group or two and still did well.  Mikey managed to tame gravity and there were no DQ's.

Notable Swims:
Roseanna B-R. won the Girls Open 100 Back (two age groups up).
Emily Fellows got a 3 second PB to take second place in the 15&U 100 Fly.
Hannah Dicker swan up an age group to win the 15&U 100 Back in a PB.
Shannon Horton swam up to come 4th in the 15&U 100 Breast in a time close to her PB.
Lauren Heppel swam up an age group  to take 4th place in the Open 100 Free in a 5 second PB.
Our thanks to Seagulls for inviting us and we look forward to making this an annual event.

Hants & South Coast - couldn't be closer!
Sat 8th Sept:  Straight up the M3, off J3 towards Bracknell and keep straight for about 5 miles till you get to the pool on the left. Simple really, yet an unnamed coach still managed to get lost!  Ferndown fielded a team to swim against 5 other teams as well as postal swims from Beau Sejour and Guernsey.  Expectations were low as swimmers had just a few weeks training under their belt after the summer break.  After 10 events Otters were just ahead of a very solid Bracknell.  By 20 events, Bracknell were in the lead and it seemed we would not cope with their depth.
The next ten events saw an Otters comeback but after 30 events, Beau Sejour had taken the lead to put Otters in second and Bracknell in third.  Event 24 saw Mikey Kingsley fight a slow-motion battle with gravity on the starting block. He put  up a valiant struggle but ultimately lost and tumbled in before the gun to gain our only DQ of the Gala.   The next 21 events saw Otters battling with Beau Sejour as they both crept away from Bracknell in the points table.  With only a few events to go, the announcer placed us equal first.  After the last few nail-biting races and an even tenser wait for the results, we won by only 4 points!

Our swimmers won 11 individual  and 6 relay races. 19 of the 34 individual swims resulted in PB's.

Notable Swims:
Sam Bates came 1st in his 100 Breast in a 4.5 second PB.
Deb Cure took 2 second of her 50 Breast to come second.
Zoe Taylor took over 2 second off her 50 Fly to come second.
Ellis Mayall took over 1 second off her 50 Free to take third.
Aaron Lee took over 1.5 seconds off his 50 Free to take third.
Naomi Vides took 3 seconds off her 100 Fly to take first.
Josh Simms took an amazing 8 seconds off his 100 Fly to take sixth.
Shannon Horton took over a second off her 50 Back to gain fourth.
Steph Hughes took almost 2 seconds off her 50 Free to win.
Myles Horlock took exactly 3 seconds off his 50 Free to get fifth.
Clodagh Dear took almost a second off her 50 Breast to win as did Noah Vides.
Emma Wignall won her 100 Free in yet another PB.
Jeff Holtom PB'ed to take third in his 100 Free.
Ellie Beckwith took over 1 second off her 50 Fly to take second.
Sam Bates took over 2 seconds off his 100 Back to take second.

Team spirit was awesome and Otters parents shamed the rest by the strength and volume of their support.  Well done to the team!

Summer Ball at Bournemouth Pier- a fantastic evening!

Gorgeous, stunning, a treat for the eyes! And that was just Denise and Emma! The view east to the Isle of Wight and west to the Purbecks wasn’t too shabby either.

Ferndown Swimming held its inaugural Summer Ball at Bournemouth Pier on Saturday night. A capacity crowd filled the land-mark venue for an evening of fun and fundraising. A risqué performance by the Mockingbirds was both enjoyable and educational. No aspect of the marital relationship was left untouched or unsung!

The Auction of Promises was a spectacular success. The Mockingbirds were hilarious as auctioneers and the crowd responded with humour and generosity. Final counts are not in as at time of writing but we safely met our targets.

Denise had her hands full running the evening as well as keeping an eye on her Mark who was in strong demand on the dance floor. Otter parents made a good showing in the fashion stakes and at the bar but there was unfortunately some very suspect dancing.

A huge thank-you to Denise and Emma for the enormous amount of work they put into this function as well as to all of the folk that helped them. Many thanks too to all the parents and businesses who donated prizes for the auction. If Grandma Platts is reading this – you should be baking that chocolate cake now! Also, please go easy on Alistair if you spot him tearing down a Dorset country lane with a man in full leathers clutching him tightly from behind. He’s doing it for the club!

Thank you form BBC Dorset :

I just wanted to say thanks for all the help I was given on Friday at
Rossmore by Tony and the team at Otters.

I am pleased to say that the article has now been published on BBC Dorset
(www.bbc.co.uk/dorset). And a link can be found here.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dorset/content/articles/2007/08/31/ferndown_otters_feature.shtml

There will be some audio to go with the article but that won't be added until later in the week when I am next in. I will let you know when that goes on as well.

Kind regards

Swansea Trip PBs galore!

16 Swimmers, two coaches and two chaperones squeezed themselves and an astonishing amount of luggage into one minibus and one car for a trip to Wales for the Swansea meet.  The swimmers had a one hour session in the pool to familiarize themselves with the facilities after a very songful trip.

The swimmers were 3 or 4 to a room and all got on well with the older ones looking after the younger swimmers.  There was a great team atmosphere and bond withing the group.  The hotel and members of the public commented on how well behaved and what a great group of kids our swimmers were!

At the pool, the team spirit continued.  We were named best supportive club - testament to our noise levels (thanks, Reuben).

Tom got a meet record in what would have been a NQT for this year.  Lucy Hargreaves got within a half second off her 100 Free NQT and Anne Marie within one second of her 100 Free NQT.  So many of our swimmers recorded great PB's and even on Day 4 were still getting Otters into the finals.  Overall, it was a fantastic meet and a perfect way to end the swimming year and translate all that training into race results!  We look forward to even more swimmers taking advantage of this meet next year.

Dorset Development Meet - Otters take Top Club:

Ferndown Otters took Top Club award at the Dorset Development Meet at Littledown this weekend. A very high participation rate saw some of our Juniors in their first races as well as many of our stronger swimmers racing their weaker events for a change. Team spirit was great and pb’s fell by huge amounts. Myles Horlock stopped for 10 seconds after 150m in his 200 Back but still managed to record an 18 seconds pb and win! The skins events at the end of both days were very exciting and almost sufficient reward for missing the finals at Wimbledon.

Ben Fellows won the 50 Back Skins with Chris Wignall coming second. Emma Wignall won the 50 Free Skins.

Chris Wignall came third in the 50 Free Skins. The Girls 50 Back Skinswas dominated by Otters with Naomi Vides taking first followed by Jacey Mayall in second and Emma Wignall in third.

2007 SJL Finals Saturday June 23rd

Southern Junior League Finals:  Well done to our team of Junior Otters who came second in the finals at Littledown on Sat 23 June.  Our swimmers recorded many pb's and showed a continual progress through the rounds.  We overcame considerable  opposition but were beaten into second by an extremely strong Bournemouth Dolphins. We wish them all the best in their next round. Click here for results

Thanks to Jo and Dean Horton and Southern Domestic for sponsoring the SJL shirts.  The swimmers looked great in them.

2007 South West Age Group Champs 16th/17th June
Another weekend, another two days at Millfield!  The second weekend of the 2007 South West Age Group Champs saw more of the Otters participating.  Our ten year olds - taking part for their first time - were noticeably more confident than the first weekend.  Overall, results were good with some outstanding swims to balance the few dissapointments.
Lucy Kirkham swam her 400 Free two seconds faster than her short course entry time.  Ellie Beckwith took almost 13 seconds off her short course entry time in her 400 Free and came in only 4 seconds off NQT.  Naoh Vides pb'ed on his 100 Free. Tod Price pb'ed too to get into the 100 Free finals where he pb'ed yet again to take Bronze. Sam Bates and Jeff Holtom swam close to their pb's in their 100 Free though Sam would have won any prize for stroke rate! Craig Freeeman pb'ed in his 100 Free heat and then again in storming final to take Bronze.  Luke Horton pb'ed in his 200 Back as did Todd Price who made the finals in that event. Ellie Beckwith pb'ed in her 200 Breast less than 5 seconds off NQT.  She took another 2 seconds off in the finals to take Bronze but just outside the NQT.  Naomi Vides won her heat of the 200 Breast just outside of her pb but pb'ed by two seconds in the finals to take Gold.  Todd Price pb'ed in the 200 IM heats and then again to take Bronze in the finals.
Sunday
Tom Tiller swam a very mature 400 Free to take four seconds off his short course entry time.  Craig Freeman swan a well judged race to take Gold in the 14 y/o 400 Free.  Lucy Kirkham proved the worth of a good breakfast by taking 2 second off her short course entry time to make the finals off the 100 Free. Both Roseanna B-R and Lucy Hargreaves were around their 100 Free pb's. Todd Price finalled in the 100 Fly where he pb'ed to take Bronze.  Luke Ragget pb'ed in his 100 Fly heat to make the finals where he swam strongly to pb again.  Zoe Taylor put in a feisty 200 Back, outside of her pb but impressive as she was not well on Saturday.  Ellen Horner missed the warmup and so did not pb in her 200 Back but impressed the coaches with her efforts and determination under the circumstances. Ellie Beckwith won the 11 y/o 200 Back in a long course NQT and went on to win Gold in the finals in a faster time yet.  Noah Vides won his 200 Breast heats and took another 6 seconds off to pb and win Gold in the finals.  Todd Price also finalled in the 200 Breast.  Ellie Beckwith finalled in the 200 IM and just 1.5 seconds off her NQT.  She swan even better in the finals to come in a frustrating half second outside the NQT.  Naomi Vides pb'ed in her 200 IM in a NQT.  She took another second off this time to take Bronze in the final.

Dorset Primary Schools Final 2007 - Saturday 9th June:

This Saturday and Sunday saw the first batch of Otters run the gauntlet of caravans and tractors, up to Millfield, for weekend one of the South West Region Age Group Championships. The  training at Bath over the year proved useful to our younger swimmers who felt much more comfortable racing long course.

Highlights of the weekend were :-

Zoe Watson claimed bronze in the carried over 800m Free in a NQT.

Naomi Vides won gold in the 100  Breast.

Noah Vides won gold in the 100 Breast.

Lucy Kirkham finalled in the 100 Back and 200 Free

Luke Ragget finalled in the 200 Fly.

Ellie Beckwith claimed silver in the 100 Back having won the heats, both in NQT's.  She also finalled in the 100 Breast.Luke Horton finalled in the 100 Back.

raig Freeman won gold in the 200 Free in a nail-biting race.

Todd Price came 3rd in the 200 Fly heats.  Although he withdrew from the finals, his time in the heats would have claimed the bronze.  Todd got bronze in the 100 back and finalled in the 200 Free.

Bath Long Course Training Thur 31 May - Fri 1 June:

26 Ferndown Otters travelled up to Bath for two days of long course training.  All the swimmers benefited from the intensive training and exposure to long course swimming.  The undoubted highlight of the two days was on Friday morning when Bath's Head Coach, Kim, had his international swimmers stay on for 45 minutes after their session to work with our swimmers on their starts and dives. This was an unexpected yet fantastic opportunity for our young swimmers to learn from world class talent.  Many thanks to Kim and his team!

4th Junior Meet at Littledown - Results
Click here for the results of the 4th Junior Meet at Littledown - Sunday 27th May. A lot of swimmers did not get the races they entered for due to the entry rules being changed to first come first served - something we will have to be aware of in the future! Despite this there were some excellent performance from our swimmers.

SJL Round 2: Bristol again and a great result
Ferndown Otters travelled up to Bristol again for Round 2 of the Southern Junior League.  Faced with strong competition from Swindon Dolphins, the Ferndown parents were quite nervous.  Swindon led for the first 10 events with Ferndown leading by just a few point after 30.  The gala continued in a closely contested fashion but first place in the last seven events saw Otters win by 254 points to Swindon's 238.   A fantastic effort by every member of the team was a just reward for Emma and Mark T's hard work and all the parents' support and driving.  Well done to each and every member of the team!

Ferndown Swimming bids a fond farewell to the Toombs family as they leave us for New Zealand.  The have made a fantastic contribution to the club over the years.  Sue has been treasurer for the past 3 years ably assisted by her husband Paul. Sami has been the most consistent swimmer in the club this year and even brother Alex, who is an ex-Otter, has put in the occasional swim with the masters.  We will miss them all and wish them the very best with their move.

Bath Long Course Training 12/13 April:
About 30 swimmers spent all or part of the 12th and 13th April at Bath for three long course training sessions. Two meets on the weekend meant that some only stayed for the Thursday training. Four swimmers from West Dorset Warriors joined the group and everyone benefited from the training and had fun. Swimmers ranged in age from 10 to 17 and it was a great opportunity for the younger swimmers to socialize with and learn from the older ones.
